Volkswagen says it has built the most efficient electric car ever tested

Volkswagen Claims to Have Built the Most Efficient Electric Car Ever Tested

Volkswagen states it has developed the most efficient electric car to date, achieving remarkable feats during testing.

Key Achievements:

  • Long-Distance Drive: The Mission Efficiency concept drove 1,278 km (794 miles) on a single charging stop.
  • Aerodynamics: Boasts a drag coefficient of 0.158, making it the most aerodynamic road-legal car ever built.
  • Efficiency Record: Recorded 7.51 kWh per 100 km (including charging losses) and 6.48 kWh in an ideal, constant-speed test at 68 kph with climate control off.

Design Secrets:

  • The car’s shape is optimized for efficiency, featuring a reduced frontal area, narrowed rear axle, covered rear wheels, and sealed underside.
  • Three cooling flaps open in five configurations for enhanced cooling efficiency.
  • Tires outperform the EU’s top efficiency class requirements.

Regulatory Challenges:

Despite these achievements, the car does not meet European regulations for small electric vehicles due to its length of 4,775 mm (18.9 feet). The proposed incentive for small electric cars excludes vehicles longer than 4.2 meters (13.8 feet).

The Paradox:

While European drivers already benefit from lower operating costs for electric vehicles, the regulations miss the mark in promoting the most efficient models, like Volkswagen’s Mission Efficiency.
