Workers are rewriting their LinkedIn histories, and 2022 now looks 30% more AI-skilled than it was

Workers Rewriting LinkedIn Histories: A 30% Boost in AI Skills in 2022

Workers are actively editing their LinkedIn profiles, adding AI-related terms to their past roles, and altering job histories. A Stanford study analyzing 29.4 million LinkedIn profiles discovered that nearly a fifth of users had retroactively changed job descriptions, with AI additions increasing significantly since ChatGPT’s launch.

Key Findings:

  • AI Term Retroactive Additions: There has been a sixfold increase in adding AI-related terms ("AI," "GPT," "LLM," etc.) to previous roles since ChatGPT’s release in late 2022.
  • Remote Work and Diversity Terms: By the end of 2025, additions of remote work language matched deletions, while diversity and inclusion terms saw a sharp decline in early 2025.
  • Temporal Discrepancy: The median edit occurred over four years after the job ended, leading researchers to coin the term "time travel" for this practice.
  • Varied Impact by Industry: Technology and information leads showed the highest rate of edits (31.6%), followed by arts and entertainment (25%) and professional and scientific services (24.1%).

Implications:

  • Career History’s Role in Labor Market Research: Adding AI language to profiles isn’t definitive proof of exaggeration, as users might be providing details left out or updating old job descriptions with current terminology.
  • AI in Recruitment: The findings have implications for AI recruitment models, particularly in Europe where the AI Act categorizes AI systems used in hiring as high-risk.
  • Compliance and Training Data: Companies training hiring models on career history now have a clear understanding of the potential biases and inaccuracies in that data, as LinkedIn profile edits can be used to assess the representativeness of training data.
