YouTube Star Cliff Tan Apologizes to 2.4 Million Fans After Promoting AI Design Tool
Interior design creator Cliff Tan apologizes to his 2.4 million YouTube subscribers
Cliff Tan, known as Dear Modern, uploaded a video on Monday withdrawing his sponsorship for Dreamina, ByteDance’s AI creative tool. He expressed regret for his previous video, in which he criticized AI, stating, "I’m really sorry about that."
The ad featured Tan using Dreamina to animate his hand-drawn sketches into a floor plan. Despite attempts to distance himself from AI, comments criticized his decision to promote the tool. Some objections included: "No, Mr. Cliff. Please. Don’t sell yourself to AI" and "the possibilities are impressive."
This incident follows a similar apology from Hank Green, who used ChatGPT for research but later ruled out letting AI write, edit, or outline any content.
The Market for AI Tool Sponsorships
The backlash highlights challenges for influencers promoting AI tools. While the interior design field is embracing AI, as noted by the British Institute of Interior Design, the sponsor’s reputation can be damaged by association. This is particularly true in a platform like YouTube, which has been cracking down on content generated with AI assistance.
Cristian Dina, CRO at The Next Web, emphasizes the complex relationship between creators and AI, noting the need for responsible integration and the potential for both positive and negative consequences.
