Zoox has shown its safety workings, three weeks after recalling every robotaxi it owns

Zoox Unveils Its Safety Framework Three Weeks After Recalling All Robotaxis

Zoox has published the reasoning behind its claim to be safer than human drivers. Everything boils down to one number: the predicted rate of collision, injury, and fatality events, expressed as miles per event. This comprehensive risk assessment includes driving software, vehicle hardware, and fleet operations.

The framework acts as a gate, ensuring that any safety-relevant updates, hardware changes, or procedural revisions pass through this evaluation before deployment.

Methodology:

Zoox’s benchmark is derived from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) crash sampling and fatality reporting systems, along with two Federal Highway Administration datasets. These datasets are weighted to match the roads its robotaxis actually travel.

What Zoox doesn’t disclose is its current safety rate. They set their target through comparison to this benchmark, aiming for significant safety improvements over human drivers but don’t define "significant."

The Engineering Behind It:

Zoox’s approach is detailed and robust:

  • Hazard Analyses: They perform specific analyses, adhering to ISO 26262 standards with integrity ratings on their platform.
  • Simulation: Simulation tests are designed to uncover potential collisions, weighted by real-world fleet exposure.
  • Unique Features: A dedicated collision checker runs perception independently and can veto planned trajectories. Zoox also maintains a test set where robotaxis must match human performance.
  • Remote Operations: TeleGuidance specialists provide route guidance while the vehicle maintains control, factoring their potential errors into the safety calculations.

Recent Events:

Three weeks prior to publishing this framework, Zoox recalled all 105 of its robotaxis after one failed to detect heavy smoke and drove into an active fire scene in Las Vegas. This was the fourth software recall in approximately 13 months, leading to NHTSA demands for fixes related to vehicles interfering with first responders. As of March, NHTSA had recorded 123 collisions involving Zoox vehicles in autonomous mode.

The analytical approach is necessary because their mileage is significantly lower than Waymo’s hundred million autonomous miles. Zoox aims to bridge this gap with a paid service while refining its safety framework.
