A 25-year-old raises $180M to build a US bank from scratch
A global startup, Augustus, has secured $180 million in funding at a $1 billion valuation to establish what it calls the Global Dollar Bank.
Tiger Global and the founders of Nubank, Ramp, Circle, and Deel are among the investors backing Augustus, which aims to provide direct access to US dollar accounts and payment systems for banks and fintechs worldwide. The startup has raised a total of $210 million to date.
The Vision: Direct Dollar Access
Augustus seeks to revolutionize global finance by offering a new approach to dollar transactions. Today, many institutions outside the US struggle with slow and inefficient correspondent banking systems to access dollars. Augustus aims to rectify this by building a real bank rather than relying on existing infrastructure.
The Young CEO: Ferdinand Dabitz
Ferdinand Dabitz, a 25-year-old German Thiel Fellow, founded the company in 2022 as a payments firm called Ivy. If final approval for a US national bank charter is granted, Dabitz will become the youngest head of a federally chartered US bank in over a century.
Greg Quarles, Augustus’ president, brings three decades of banking experience and regulatory expertise to the table. Together, they aim to challenge the legacy infrastructure of correspondent banking.
Crypto’s Role: Plumbing for the Future
While crypto is involved, Augustus will not issue its own stablecoin. Instead, it plans to integrate stablecoins as a payment method, alongside traditional methods like Swift, ACH, and SEPA. The platform uses AI in its back office for continuous settlement, leveraging advanced technology to enhance efficiency.
Dabitz believes that within a decade, every clearing bank will offer stablecoin rails. He argues that as AI agents take on more financial tasks, they will require programmable money to handle these transactions effectively.
The Future of Cross-Border Payments
Augustus already clears euros through a regulated entity in Finland and has Kraken, a crypto exchange, as a customer. The startup’s long-term vision includes the widespread adoption of stablecoins in cross-border payments, aiming for a future where traditional banking infrastructure is no longer the sole option.
