The Milan-based group-adventure-travel platform, WeRoad, secured a $58 million Series C investment from Airbnb, taking a 10% stake and securing a board seat. Simultaneously, Andrea D’Amico, WeRoad’s CEO since 2022, is leaving to lead Airbnb’s hotels division. This unusual strategic move combines financial backing with operational expertise, as D’Amico brings 20 years of experience in hotel operations from his time at Booking.com.
Airbnb’s investment structure is notable for its integration strategy. While historically focusing on organic growth in the Experiences and tours business, this investment directly involves a minority position in the group-tour category and brings an experienced operator to spearhead their hotels initiative. D’Amico’s prior role at Booking.com covered large parts of their hotel business in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
WeRoad has achieved significant success since its Series B round in late 2023, raising a further $58 million for US expansion. With a focus on millennial group travel, they aim to leverage their tour-guide platform and brand presence on social media like Instagram and TikTok. However, the US market presents challenges with established competitors like Intrepid, G Adventures, and Expedia’s tour layers.
This deal is strategically significant for Airbnb, demonstrating their willingness to invest substantial capital in diversifying beyond short-term rentals. By hiring an operator with Booking.com experience, Airbnb aims to accelerate its move into the longer-term hotel category, facing both product team growth experiments and a competitive landscape. The valuation implies by Airbnb’s stake is approximately $580 million post-money, reflecting a substantial premium from WeRoad’s Series B valuation.
