Mizuho, Bank of America, and Morgan Stanley have been mandated to run the books. The issuance is expected to total several hundred billion yen, with pricing decisions due later this month.
Background
This yen bond sale follows Alphabet’s aggressive multi-currency funding programme throughout 2026, aimed at financing an AI infrastructure build that has reached a substantial scale.
Prior to this, Alphabet:
- February: Issued a debut Swiss franc deal, the largest-ever corporate bond sale in the Swiss market.
- Last week: Combined a $32bn multi-currency drive with a EUR 9bn euro deal and a CAD 8.5bn Canadian dollar issuance.
The Yen Market Opportunity
The yen trade extends Alphabet’s funding strategy to a sixth currency, providing long-duration JPY funding rarely priced in recent years. This is particularly beneficial as:
- Japanese institutional investors have been seeking high-quality assets to match with their long-term liabilities.
- Japanese yields remain significantly below US dollar equivalents at every point on the curve, offering substantial coupon savings for a corporate borrower.
Why Mizuho?
The Mizuho mandate acts as the local hook, alongside Bank of America and Morgan Stanley.
