Amazon Shuts Down Its AGI Lab Amidst Fresh AI Layoffs
Amazon has quietly shut down its Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) Lab, a team established just 18 months ago to pursue human-level AI capabilities. This move, part of wider layoffs within Amazon’s AGI unit, signals the company’s retreat from a frontier race it never truly led.

According to The Information, the lab, based in San Francisco, was closed this week with its staff being let go. Amazon’s official stance is one of focus rather than surrender, stating, "We’ve been building large AI models for several years, and it remains one of the most important things we’re working on." They further emphasize their new direction: "eliminating some roles within parts of our AGI organization".
Top-level exits preceded the layoffs. Rohit Prasad, the executive overseeing Amazon’s AGI work, left at the end of last year. David Luan, head of the AGI Lab, departed in February. Subsequently, Amazon integrated its AGI efforts under Peter DeSantis alongside chip and quantum teams.
This is part of a broader trend across tech as companies trim teams and point to AI as a culprit. The rapid departure of two leaders and an entire lab within such a short period is highly indicative.
Amazon’s Approach to AI:
While the company has invested heavily in AI, its focus has rarely been on cutting-edge research. Its own models have had limited impact, and its strategy revolves around AWS and substantial AI spending on infrastructure. Amazon prefers to sell tools and agents that businesses can use with their AI rather than developing the most advanced brain itself.
The question remains: are today’s Large Language Models (LLMs) even a viable path to achieving General Intelligence? A growing debate suggests they may not be, and whether Amazon agrees or simply prioritizes profit, its decision indicates it no longer aims to invent but to sell AI technology.
