Dutch company ASML: Closing the Gap to a Trillion-Dollar Valuation with AI

The Dutch Lithography Monopoly

ASML, a Dutch company, boasts a market value of approximately $700 billion (€600 billion), positioning it as Europe’s most valuable listed business. A growing number of its investors believe that reaching the next round figure—a trillion dollars—is not merely speculative but an achievable goal.

The Drive Towards Trillion-Dollar Valuation

The argument for ASML’s potential trillion-dollar status is rooted in its order book and the impact of AI on demand for lithography systems. Here are some key points:

  • Order Book Strength: AI has surged demand for advanced chip printing machines, surpassing what ASML can produce. The company is optimizing production times, moving from 22 weeks to assemble each machine down to 15-16 weeks.

  • Production Expansion: ASML plans to increase annual output of its extreme ultraviolet systems by 30% in 2027 and raise production of deep-ultraviolet machines similarly.

  • Sales Growth: The company has raised its 2026 sales forecast twice and is nearly fully booked for 2027, indicating strong demand.

The Mathematics of Reaching a Trillion

Reaching a trillion-dollar valuation requires approximately $300 billion in additional value, representing a 40% increase from the current stock price, which has already gained around 60% year-to-date.

Analyst Outlook

Barclays, Susquehanna, and Bernstein have all raised price targets for ASML shares since the second-quarter results, reflecting investor confidence in the company’s growth prospects:

"I think it has a really good chance of being the first company in Europe to hit the trillion mark,” said Carolyn Bell of Stonehage Fleming. "I just don’t know when."

Q2 Financial Performance

ASML’s second-quarter results were impressive, reporting:

  • Net Sales: €9.3 billion
  • Net Income: €2.9 billion with a 54% gross margin
  • Shipped Systems: 86 lithography systems (up from 67 in Q1)
  • Full-Year Guidance: Revised to €43-45 billion

The Monopoly and AI’s Impact

ASML holds a monopoly on extreme ultraviolet lithography machines, which are essential for manufacturing the finest transistors needed for AI accelerators. Intel became the first major chipmaker to ship high-volume commercial chips using ASML’s technology this year, ensuring ongoing demand from leading-edge manufacturers like TSMC and Samsung.

Caveats and Concerns

  • China Sales: A significant portion of ASML’s sales (around 20%) comes from China, a figure that has decreased sharply due to export controls.

  • Cyclicality: The broader semiconductor industry faces cyclical challenges, with concerns about potential downturns impacting ASML’s future performance.

  • Regulatory Risks: Proposed US legislation could further restrict ASML’s sales to China, adding uncertainty to its growth prospects.
