Microsoft’s Copilot: Entertainment Only?

Microsoft calls Copilot ‘entertainment only’ while charging $30 a month for it

In short:
Microsoft has invested heavily in integrating its AI tool, Copilot, across various products. However, its Terms of Use contain a hidden clause stating that Copilot is merely for "entertainment purposes only," contradicting the company’s promotional claims.

A Hidden Disclaimer

Somewhere between Satya Nadella’s earnings calls and product pages boasting about transforming work, Microsoft added a sentence to Copilot’s Terms of Use:

"Copilot is for entertainment purposes only. It can make mistakes, and it may not work as intended. Don’t rely on Copilot for important advice. Use Copilot at your own risk."

This clause appears under bold capital letters labeled "IMPORTANT DISCLOSURES & WARNINGS."

What Microsoft Has Said Publicly

Since launching Copilot in 2023, Microsoft has positioned it as a productivity booster, an "AI companion" for users in Windows 11 and Microsoft 365. Nadella has even described it as a daily habit, with investors noting a significant growth in daily active users. The company’s substantial investment in AI, including a $13 billion acquisition of OpenAI, underpins Copilot’s capabilities.

Enterprise Pricing vs. Entertainment

The discrepancy lies in the pricing: Microsoft 365 Copilot is priced at $30 per user per month as an enterprise add-on, while consumer tiers start at higher rates. The term "entertainment purposes only" does not typically accompany such pricing.

Legal Interpretations

Legal analysts suggest that the clause might be a lawyer’s attempt to limit liability in case of product failures. However, it has since become an embarrassing contradiction to Microsoft’s aggressive marketing. Companies like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic also include similar disclaimers but often less bluntly phrased.
