ADAC Tests Five EVs for Charging Losses

ADAC tested five electric vehicles (EVs) for charging losses, finding significant variations in energy efficiency. One EV wasted a quarter of the energy during household charging.

Key Findings:

  • Household sockets waste between 12.7% and 24.2% of electricity drawn for charging, according to ADAC tests.
  • An 11 kW wallbox significantly reduces charging losses, cutting waste to between 5.1% and 7%.
  • The Mercedes CLA demonstrated the highest losses at a household socket (24.2%), due to its charger drawing only 8 amps.
  • Fast charging still incurs losses, ranging from 5% to 15%, with lower losses when batteries are preconditioned or warmer.

Implications:

The findings highlight the importance of using efficient charging methods, like wallboxes, to maximize energy efficiency and reduce electricity bills. The gap between quoted consumption and actual household electricity usage is significant, emphasizing the need for transparency in EV charging.
