AI Workers Turn an Extinction Warning into a Copy-and-Paste Meme

AI workers have taken an Anthropic researcher’s warning about the potential end of humanity due to AI and turned it into a viral meme within a day. Dozens of users on X (formerly Twitter) copied his resignation post word for word, replacing the dire threat with humorous alternatives like self-painting tunnels, pop lyrics, and self-closing spreadsheets.

The Original Warning

Jacob Coxon, a former Anthropic researcher who previously worked at OpenAI, publicly resigned from Anthropic, stating:

“They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives.”

He expressed serious concerns about the rapid development of AI and its potential risks.

The Meme Format

The meme format is simple yet effective. It involves a dramatic resignation post where the writer accuses their employer of irresponsible behavior, predicting catastrophic outcomes. However, instead of the initial threat, users swap it with a lighthearted or absurd alternative, maintaining the original tone and structure.

Many contributors to this trend worked in AI and technology themselves, including designers, software engineers, and startup founders. They ranged from Jae Holzman, a senior reporter at Heatmap, who resigned from Acme Corporation due to "pre-gag research" on self-painting fake tunnel technology, to Isha Taghvaei, a designer who replaced the threat with lyrics from Natasha Bedingfield’s "Unwritten."

Examples of Meme Posts

  • Isha Taghvaei: "They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives." …releasing their inhibitions and feeling the rain on their skin.

  • Alan Rice (software engineer): "They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives." …plants and birds and rocks and things.

  • Ian Tracey (senior staff software engineer at Ramp): "They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives." …self-closing books. No one knows what happens when businesses save too much time and money.

This meme trend highlights the fear and anxiety surrounding AI’s rapid development, even as it offers a humorous outlet for expressing these concerns.
