An AirTag hidden inside a rare book traveled across the United States and ended up at an Amazon book scanning facility in Las Vegas.

Amazon, however, has remained tight-lipped on the subject, declining to comment and offering a generic statement regarding their book purchasing practices.

What Was Found at the Warehouse

Amazon's book scanning team, operating under the name VGT3, strips bindings from large shipments of books to facilitate faster scanning. 404 Media discovered that workers at the site had discussed a shortage of books for scanning earlier this year, raising concerns about the warehouse's future.

Unraveling the Mystery

A significant detail emerged from 404 Media's investigation: discussions among workers indicated that they scan the barcode or ISBN before scanning the book. This supports the theory that AI buyers are targeting specific ISBNs, chasing every printed book, regardless of title or monetary value.

The bookseller who planted the AirTag highlighted the value of rare books' historical, intellectual, and sentimental significance, which AI companies do not appreciate.

The Value of Old Paper

The surge in demand for books published before 2022 stems from the fact that these materials are free from machine-generated text, ensuring better model performance.
