Analog Devices Acquires Alif Semiconductor for $1.35 Billion
Analog Devices will pay $1.35 billion for edge AI chipmaker Alif Semiconductor.

Analog Devices has agreed to buy Alif Semiconductor for $1.35 billion in cash, with up to $200 million more contingent on performance. The acquisition adds a line of microcontrollers built to run neural networks directly within devices rather than relying on data center processing.
The deal was announced today and is expected to close before the end of the year, subject to usual conditions and antitrust clearance in the United States.
Alif, based in Pleasanton, California, designs what it calls fusion processors alongside its Ensemble and Balletto microcontroller families. This unique architecture combines a dedicated low-power neural processing unit with connectivity and power management on a single die. This allows sensors to perform on-device image classification without waking a more powerful processor or transmitting data to a server.
Alif’s silicon is already in production with consumer and industrial customers.
Qualcomm made a similar strategic move when it acquired Edge Impulse.
The price makes sense considering that microcontrollers typically sell for just a few dollars each, but the massive number of potential endpoints means that most won’t be able to afford cloud-based processing.
Analog Devices is buying into the opposite end of the AI spectrum from what’s currently receiving most attention—measured in gigawatts. Samsung has also backed Axelera on similar principles.
This dual movement underscores a crucial point: both high-power data center AI and low-power edge computing are happening simultaneously.
While this week saw banks lend $3.1 billion for Nvidia hardware to power a gigawatt of Indonesian data centers, Google committed €13 billion to Finnish sites underwritten by a 22-year nuclear power agreement.
In contrast, Alif’s parts run neural networks on battery power in devices like doorbells and hearing aids, with markets measured in billions of units rather than megawatts.
“AI is moving out of the data center and into the physical world,” said Vincent Roche, Alif’s CEO and chair, “where latency, power, and trust cannot be compromised.”
Reza Kazerounian, Alif’s co-founder and president, emphasized that their heterogeneous architecture was designed from the ground up to support on-device AI inference. This differs from general-purpose microcontrollers with accelerators added later.
This acquisition is also part of a broader pattern. Analog Devices has also agreed to buy Empower Semiconductor, which specializes in high-density power delivery for AI systems.
