Anthropic and Blackstone Launch Ode: An AI Implementation Firm
Anthropic, Blackstone, and Hellman & Friedman have unveiled Ode, a $1.5 billion AI implementation company. They believe that the next significant fortune in AI lies not in model development but in deploying these models within large organizations.
The Pitch
Ode offers AI implementation services. It sends experienced engineering teams into businesses to identify areas where AI can be beneficial and then builds the systems to make it happen. This approach, referred to as a "Claude-first" strategy by its founders, utilizes Anthropic’s models when possible and leverages competitors’ models otherwise.
Chief Executive Chris Taylor expressed his ambitious vision: "It’s pretty easy to imagine this as a trillion-dollar company someday if we execute well." Despite the potential, most enterprise AI pilots never reach production, a gap that Ode aims to bridge.
A Special Forces Approach
Ode employs approximately 100 engineers, many of whom have prior startup experience. One Blackstone executive described them as "special forces," emphasizing their specialized nature rather than a large pool of generic engineers.
The company is built on Fractional AI, an applied AI boutique that they acquired in May. Blackstone had previously worked with Fractional to integrate AI into its portfolio companies, and the partnership concluded when Ode’s acquisition closed. Eddie Siegel and Chris Taylor, founders of Fractional AI, now lead Ode.
A Crowded Market
Ode is not alone in this venture. OpenAI has The Deployment Company, consulting giants Deloitte and Accenture have dedicated teams, and even Microsoft emphasizes the importance of AI transforming business operations. The demand is evident, but so is the challenge, as companies navigate past privacy concerns following incidents like HubSpot’s customer data revolt and address measurement gaps in AI effectiveness.
Ode’s strategy posits that a small team of high-calibre engineers can achieve where others have failed.
