Anthropic Signs $35 Billion Cloud Deal with Nvidia-Backed Lambda
Anthropic has committed to a $35 billion cloud agreement with an obscure provider, Lambda, for capacity in a Texas data center built by a former bitcoin miner. According to The Wall Street Journal and confirmed by Reuters, the deal involves Lambda, backed by Nvidia, securing data center space developed by Hut 8 while Nvidia supplies the hardware.
This arrangement is part of a broader trend where cloud providers are partnering with companies like Nvidia to secure property and financing for deploying their systems. It mirrors Nvidia’s revenue-sharing program launched in July and temporarily halted due to antitrust concerns.
For Anthropic, this is one of several significant deals recently concluded. They include agreements with Nscale in West Virginia for $45 billion over six years, Amazon Web Services (AWS) for more than $100 billion over a decade, and other substantial arrangements with Google, Broadcom, and Meta.
The common thread among these deals is the pursuit of diversification across multiple suppliers to avoid reliance on a single provider. This strategy aims to ensure resilience while leveraging specialized hardware and infrastructure.
Texas has emerged as a popular destination for data centers due to its cheap land, dedicated grids, and efficient permitting processes, making it an attractive location for scaling AI infrastructure. However, these commitments represent future obligations against revenue that has yet to reach such scales.
