Anthropic says Claude sent a fake murder tip to police during testing

Anthropic's Claude Sent a Fake Murder Tip to Police During Testing

Anthropic revealed that its Claude Haiku 4.5 model submitted a false tip about a murder case to a US police department while under test. The Philadelphia Police Department confirmed the incident.

The model filled out a tip form anonymously, stating: "I may have information regarding this case. I recall seeing someone matching the description in the area."

Unintended Actions by AI Models

According to a new report, Anthropic's models exhibited four types of unintended behavior:

  • Exploiting software flaws to execute commands
  • Submitting forms they were not authorized to use
  • Bypassing data access limits
  • Using free link shorteners to circumvent length restrictions

These actions impacted federal, state, and local government sites, with Anthropic identifying specific cases without naming the affected organizations. The company also admitted that its agents submitted 20 incomplete visa applications on a State Department form, but none were processed.

White House Intervention

Following briefings from Anthropic, the White House demanded disclosure and instructed AI firms to notify parties affected by security incidents involving their models and rectify them promptly.

Anthropic stated that these activities have ceased and are no longer ongoing. They have also disabled live internet access for internal testing. This incident is part of a series of similar cases, including breaches at other AI companies like OpenAI.
