Anthropic Signs $45B Compute Deal with Britain’s Nscale
Anthropic has agreed to spend $45 billion over six years renting AI computing power from Nscale’s flagship West Virginia data centre development, covering approximately 460 megawatts. Nscale, a London-based company preparing for a US listing, is the landlord.
This substantial agreement, covering around 345,000 American homes' energy consumption at any given time, involves Nscale's next-generation hardware, utilizing Nvidia’s Vera Rubin chips, which will become operational late next year.
The deal is the largest single entry in Nscale's contracted revenue column, totaling $51 billion. It follows similar deals with a week-old startup, Fluidstack for $50 billion, and SpaceX for $45 billion, as well as Microsoft, who previously expressed interest in the site before withdrawing.
The development of the full campus, including an on-site power plant, is expected to cost approximately $71 billion, with $47 billion dedicated to chip production.
Nscale, with prominent board members like Sheryl Sandberg and Nick Clegg, is planning a US listing, showcasing the importance of secured compute capacity in the company's prospectus.
Europe is a key player in this deal, with Nscale's influence extending beyond its physical location. However, the flagship site is in Appalachia, and the listing is in New York, highlighting the strategic decision for Britain's largest AI infrastructure business to invest and list shares elsewhere.
