Anthropic’s Controversial Cybersecurity Model: Navigating Government and Public Opinion

Anthropic’s Mythos, their advanced cybersecurity model, has sparked debate and rapid movement between governments since its unveiling. This comes as regulators grapple with what role, if any, the model should play.

On May 1, 2026, an unnamed Trump administration official expressed opposition to Anthropic’s plan to expand access to Myths, citing security concerns and limited computing power. Concurrently, the same administration was developing an executive action to allow federal agencies to utilize the model despite the Pentagon’s supply chain risk designation.

This internal conflict within the government reflects a larger narrative: the delicate balance between fostering innovation and ensuring security.

Anthropic initially launched Myths through Project Glasswing, a collaboration with eleven prominent tech companies, extending access to forty critical infrastructure organizations. They claimed the model had autonomously identified thousands of zero-day vulnerabilities across major operating systems and web browsers, including a 27-year-old bug in OpenBSD and a 17-year-old remote code execution flaw in FreeBSD.

This dramatic demonstration raised both excitement and alarm. Cybersecurity expert Bruce Schneier described the launch as a "PR play," acknowledging that genuine concerns about Myths‘ capabilities exist.

Even as Anthropic claimed groundbreaking discoveries, Stanislav Fort demonstrated that smaller models could replicate these findings, raising questions about the uniqueness and significance of Myths. This highlights the complex tapestry of public and private interests surrounding cutting-edge technology like Myths.
