Audi has spent years betting its future on electric cars, but the new Q9 is a departure from that strategy. While it incorporates some advanced technology like a ChatGPT voice assistant and hands-free driver-assist system, its primary power source is a combustion engine built by Volkswagen’s new petrol-first platform.
Tailoring to American Preferences
Product chief Filip Brabec explicitly stated that the Q9 is designed for the US market, featuring engines and cupholders tailored to American tastes. SUVs dominate the premium market at over 80%, making this Audi’s direct pitch to the biggest and most profitable segment.
The EV Strategy That Backfired
Audi was an early adopter of electric vehicles with the e-tron launch in 2019, but the US market did not follow suit. Pure EVs only represent 5.4% of American sales in June, leaving Audi’s petrol models without sufficient attention to compete.
Tariffs and Production Challenges
The Q9’s import status from Europe exacerbates tariffs plaguing Audi’s entire US lineup, making it more vulnerable than competitors like BMW and Mercedes, which operate local factories. Audi executives are considering US production but currently build nothing there, highlighting the challenge of having plants on the wrong continent.
Global Headwinds and Domestic Unrest
The cost issues aren’t limited to the US; they’re felt back home in Germany as well. On Wednesday, around 6,000 Audi workers protested at the Neckarsulm plant over potential closures and job cuts threatening their jobs. Volkswagen has warned that some sites could close after 2030, part of a broader industry overhaul expected to double job cuts to 100,000.
