Auditing the Agent Economy: Forecasts and Realities
What the Forecasts Say
Grand View Research forecasts the agentic AI market to reach $24.5 billion by 2030, while MarketsandMarkets estimates a size of $52.62 billion over the same period, both with a compound growth rate near 46%. Despite these differences in absolute sizes, their convergence on the growth rate indicates a consistent trend.
The Focus and Methodologies
Grand View Research focuses specifically on enterprise deployment, projecting its growth from $2.6 billion in 2024 to $24.5 billion by 2030 at a 46.2% compound rate. MarketsandMarkets, on the other hand, takes a broader view, considering AI agents as a category that ranges from $5.26 billion in 2024 to $52.62 billion in four years at 46.3%.
The Importance of Growth Rates
The agreement on growth rates is more significant than the differing absolute market sizes. While definitions and boundaries play a role, growth rates tend to be more resilient to change.
Budget Allocation within Agentic AI
Agent budgets can be divided into four main layers: data, execution, identity, and payments. However, only data has a widely accepted standard.
- Gartner projects that machine customers will control approximately $30 trillion in purchases by 2030, with AI agents responsible for $15 trillion in B2B purchases as early as 2028.
- McKinsey estimates consumer commerce mediated by agents to be between $3 trillion and $5 trillion by 2030.
- Gartner suggests that $234 billion of enterprise application software spend is at risk from agentic AI, indicating potential displacement rather than new creation.
Payments and Market Infrastructure
The payments layer is where finance intersects with agentic AI. Standards are emerging:
- Stripe and Tempo launched the Machine Payments Protocol in March 2026.
- Mastercard introduced Agent Pay for Machines in June.
- Coinbase contributed to the Linux Foundation in April.
In contrast, market venues have taken a different approach. Binance exposed market data and trading to compliant agents through an MCP endpoint on August 20, 2026, opting for interoperability over proprietary connectors.
"AI agents are becoming another way people interact with financial markets… That makes it easier to create AI-driven financial applications without having to recreate the underlying infrastructure each time." – Jeff Li, VP of Product at Binance.
