BMW Celebrates Two Million Electric Cars Sold Globally, Europe Leads the Charge
BMW has delivered its two millionth fully electric vehicle, an i5 M60 xDrive built in Bavaria and handed to a customer in Spain. Europe (learn more) accounted for a staggering 81,445 of the 116,807 battery-electric cars sold by BMW in the second quarter of this year.
This milestone marks a significant achievement since BMW’s electric vehicle journey began in 2013. Including plug-in hybrids, the company has delivered approximately 3.5 million electrified vehicles worldwide.
Recent growth has been predominantly European, with Europe taking seven out of ten battery-electric cars sold by BMW in Q2. China and the United States accounted for the remaining share.
The iX3 plays a pivotal role in this success story, garnering nearly 100,000 orders since its launch. One in three electric BMWs ordered in Europe is an iX3, with half of all X3 orders now for the electric variant.
European adoption of electric vehicles is outpacing the global average, with battery-electric cars comprising 28% of BMW’s European sales in H1, a figure that highlights the growing acceptance of kerbside charging infrastructure across the region.
BMW sees this as vindication of its efforts: "Selling two million battery-electric cars underlines how BMW and MINI models are winning over customers worldwide", said Jochen Goller, board member for customer, brands, and sales.
While worldwide is the key word here, it’s clear that Europe is driving this electric revolution, with a German plant, a Spanish customer, and a robust European order book supporting BMW’s global electric vehicle strategy.
