BMW to Merge Navigation and Driver Assistance into a Single 3D View from October
BMW will merge navigation and driver assistance into one 3D view starting October, on vehicles running its Operating System X, as announced by the company. It plans to introduce navigation-guided semi-automated urban driving in Germany in 2027.
The central display combines route guidance, the surrounding traffic, and driver assistance information in a single view. According to Stephan Durach, a BMW senior vice president, this integration represents "an important step toward highly automated driving."
This feature is based on mapping data from Mapbox, combining map data, vehicle sensors, and artificial intelligence. It will be available in phases, alongside Highway Assistant or Highway and City Assistant, in select countries, cities, and roads.
Tesla has offered a similar lane-keeping feature for years, making the design visually familiar to Model 3 drivers.
The timing is significant as BMW aligns with UN Regulation 171 which governs these systems. The 02 series, expected to take effect in late January 2027, extends system-initiated maneuvers to urban roads and allows for hands-off driving under specific conditions.
BMW was the first German carmaker to be approved under this regulation, covering hands-off functions for its Motorway Assistant and Active Lane Change with eye activation. The company is adhering to the rule rather than seeking exemptions, a process that is slower and more challenging to reverse later.
Tesla has received approval for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised system in several countries through exemptions, as its urban capabilities exceed the limitations of the current regulation.
