China’s car exports beat last year’s record with four months to go

China’s Car Exports Break Records Amid Shifting Market Dynamics

China exported more than 6.2 million passenger cars in the first eight months of 2026, surpassing its full-year total for 2025 with four months remaining, according to The Associated Press. August alone saw approximately 890,000 exports, a remarkable 67.1% increase year-on-year.

Domestic Sales vs. Global Export Growth

In contrast, domestic sales in China dipped by 25.6% in August, with fewer than 1.5 million cars sold. This trend was noted by TNW in July, where a 20% drop in the first half was reported.

Europe: A Key Market for Chinese Car Exports

Europe has become a significant destination for Chinese car exports, with Chinese marques achieving a record market share of 10.9% in June, totaling 150,272 registrations. This represents an impressive 118% year-on-year growth.

EU Tariffs and Plug-in Hybrids

The EU's tariffs on Chinese car exports primarily cover battery electric cars, with rates up to 35% above the standard 10% duty. Plug-in hybrids, however, are not subject to these duties, leading to a surge in Chinese brand market share for this segment in Europe. These brands captured 28% of the European plug-in hybrid market in the first half, with BYD's Hungarian plant set to begin mass production soon.

The Future of China's Car Exports

S&P Global Ratings predicts that full-year passenger vehicle exports will grow by 50% to 70%, with strong export growth expected to offset domestic weakness. As European brands face increasing competition from Chinese manufacturers, the EU is considering duties on plug-in hybrids, but implementation remains pending.
