DoorDash’s Tony Xu says AI agents will increase demand for human labour

DoorDash’s Tony Xu: AI Agents to Increase Demand for Human Labor

In Turin, DoorDash’s chief executive, Tony Xu, discussed how AI agents will revolutionize shopping, food, and returns, leveraging real-world networks and collaborating with robots, drones, and couriers.

Xu emphasized that as AI agents become more prevalent, they will drive greater demand for physical delivery networks and even human labor. While AI has likely surpassed humans in many online tasks, he noted, they excel at recurring, physically-based activities like shopping, eating, and returns.

“One of the most useful things to do is things in your daily life which tend to have a physical component, like shopping or eating or picking something up or returning something,” Xu said.

As the number of AI agents grows, so will the need for physical networks and human assistance. DoorDash already has an ordering agent integrated into Apple Messages, launched in September.

Early Days and Growth

DoorDash's origins stemmed from helping local businesses, like Xu's mother's restaurant, which offered limited delivery options in the US during its inception in 2013. Xu and his co-founders started delivering meals themselves from their Palo Alto driveways.

Focus on Innovation

DoorDash's success is built on a culture of innovation. They maintain low barriers to entry, allowing employees to test ideas directly with customers without extensive approval processes.

Emerging Technologies

Xu highlighted several technological advancements, including:

  • DoorDash's Dot robot: A commercially viable autonomous vehicle capable of navigating roads, bike lanes, and sidewalks, currently in testing phases in Phoenix.
  • Delivery Robots: Deliveroo's recent deployment of robots on UK sidewalks.
  • Drone Delivery System: Unveiled by DoorDash in September.

The Future: A Networked Ecosystem

Going forward, Xu aims to build a global last-mile delivery network that seamlessly integrates robots, drones, and human couriers, prioritizing customer convenience above technological advancements.

"No customers care about the technology. They just care about getting what they ordered," he concluded.
