Dr. Dre: Only Struggling Creators Fear AI
Dr. Dre is embracing artificial intelligence (AI) in music and draws a parallel with the early days of drum machines, according to an interview with The New York Times published on Sunday. Jimmy Iovine, his longtime business partner, agrees, stating that he sees no negative aspects to AI in music creation.
"I think the only people that see it as a threat are the people who have trouble creating," Dre said, echoing common arguments made by musicians regarding new technology. He compares AI to drum machines and synthesizers, suggesting they were initially met with resistance before becoming widely accepted tools for creativity.
Dre explains his use of AI:
"I use it as a tool to see what it would do with something I had just made."
While Dre remains vague on the specifics, TechRadar‘s Tom Bedford notes that this could range from generating entire tracks to organizing files.
Jimmy Iovine’s Support for AI:
Iovine is more vocal about his support for AI in music, stating:
"I’m very pro-A.I. in music creation. I don’t see the downside at all. There will be some crappy music. There’s crappy music now."
He believes that AI can enhance the work of talented musicians and improve their recordings. Iovine also mentions that there are already "closet AI producers" who use the technology without public disclosure.
AI in Music Today:
Several artists, including Timbaland, David Guetta, and Grimes, have acknowledged using AI in their music production. Apple Music is set to introduce labeling for AI-generated songs later this year, following Spotify’s initiative to tag such tracks as AI Personas.
