Dutch Monumental Raises $32M Led by Khosla to Deploy More Bricklaying Robots
The Amsterdam-based company now operates a fleet of over 150 machines as an autonomous subcontractor, primarily in the Netherlands and the UK. The newly secured funding will facilitate an expansion to Britain and its first venture into the United States.

Monumental has closed a $32 million Series B round led by Khosla Ventures, with Plural and Hummingbird returning as investors from their previous $25 million funding in 2024. The capital will be allocated to:
- Growing its engineering team
- Expanding its fleet across Europe
- Strengthening operations in the UK
- Teaching robots multiple trades
- Launching operations in the United States this year
The company’s current fleet comprises over 150 robots, all fully electric and equipped with sensors, computer vision, and a small crane arm for precise bricklaying. These machines are coordinated by Monumental’s software platform, Atrium.
So far, Monumental has constructed over 100 homes in the Netherlands and UK, as well as a school, community center, hotel, and canal wall section in Amsterdam, with nearly half of these projects completed in the past three months.
Instead of selling robots to builders, Monumental operates as a subcontractor, hiring out its machines and managing their maintenance. This approach allows for growth limited only by the number of robots it can build and staff, rather than sales.
Salar al Khafaji, co-founder and CEO of Monumental, stated:
"The world simply does not have enough people to build what it needs, and that shortage will not be solved by another app or another robot doing backflips on stage. It takes machines that turn up on site and lay real brick all day, to spec."
Key Targets:
- UK: Aiming to address a severe shortage of bricklayers, with the government targeting 1.5 million new homes. Monumental estimates a need for around 20,000 to 25,000 additional bricklayers.
- US: Marking its first expansion into the American market this year.
