Europe’s AI Supercomputer Order: A €388M Investment

Europe is investing heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure with the purchase of another supercomputer, LUMI-AI, valued at €387.8 million (approximately $449 million). This system will be built by Bull, a French company recently acquired by the French state.

Key Details:

  • Location: Kajaani, northern Finland
  • Deployment: Second half of 2027
  • Capacity: Expected to deliver ten times the AI capacity of the existing LUMI supercomputer
  • Hardware: AMD Instinct MI430X accelerators, EPYC processors with 256 cores, BullSequana XH3500 architecture
  • European Identity: Bull providing BXI interconnect and warm-water direct liquid cooling technology
  • Suppliers: IBM Storage Scale for storage layer, Nokia for data centre networking

The LUMI AI Factory consortium, comprising Finland, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Norway, and Poland, will share the costs with EuroHPC. This collaboration ensures that the advanced infrastructure benefits researchers and companies across Europe (europe on 164news.com).

Bull’s acquisition by the French state has played a crucial role in securing this contract, as it retains key technologies within Europe while strengthening the company’s position in the AI supercomputing market.
