Agon Secures $30 Million to Develop Europe’s Synthetic Battlefield for Defense AI
Agon, founded by veterans of Anduril and Applied Intuition, has emerged from stealth with $30 million to build a "synthetic combat arena" for Europe’s autonomous weapons. The company believes defense AI requires its own specialized training layer, although they have not yet named a customer.

A London startup creating training grounds for Europe’s autonomous weapons has left stealth with $30 million in funding. This rounds out one of the largest defense-tech seed investments this year in the region.
Agon isn’t developing the weapons themselves; they are building the infrastructure to train them—a synthetic combat arena for AI-powered drones, missiles, and uncrewed vehicles. These arenas allow the systems to practice, endure hits, and harden before entering a real battlefield, according to Resilience Media.
The funding split into a $7 million pre-seed round and a $23 million seed round. Lakestar, Lux Capital, Northzone, and XYZ Venture Capital are among the investors, with 201 Ventures and D3 participating in the earlier stage. Lakestar’s Klaus Hommels joined the board, as reported by tech.eu. The news was initially broken by The Times.
Data Bottleneck in Defense AI
Agon tackles a critical issue: a shortage of high-quality training data for defense systems. Modern defense applications heavily rely on AI, from command software to navigation and decision-making within drones and missiles. All these systems require extensive training data to improve performance, but such data is scarce, often classified, and dispersed across countries reluctant to share it.
Synthetic Training Ground Solution
Agon proposes to create a synthetic version of battlefield data, offering nations a secure environment in which to train their systems on confidential data without external dependencies.
"We are in an AI arms race," said Agon’s CEO, Tristam Constant. "Agon is developing the infrastructure that will ensure European defense can iterate and orchestrate systems at the pace of the threat."
Differentiating from Scale AI
Beneath its surface, Agon’s model challenges the approach taken by companies like Scale AI, which focus on labeling data for various models. Agon believes defense AI requires a more specialized platform tailored to specific systems and end-users, rather than a one-size-fits-all solution.
"Our launch today reflects the critical need for Europe to establish its own sovereign defense AI capability," said co-founder Junaid Hussain. He added that the funds will enable the company to scale and enhance its platform for European customers.
Expertise Behind Agon
The founders’ backgrounds drew investors:
- Tristam Constant led Applied Intuition’s European defense business, served as a senior director for Europe at Anduril, and spent 13 years in the British Army prior to his entrepreneurial ventures.
- Junaid Hussain is a serial entrepreneur who co-founded the defense startup Cambridge Aerospace and AI gaming company Iconic.
- David Helgason, the company’s chair, is the founder of games engine giant Unity. This marks his first chairmanship in defense, following a distinguished career in the industry.
