Germany Evaluates 30 AI Tools for Its Military
The Bundeswehr is assessing 30 artificial intelligence tools that could enhance battlefield decision-making by processing data from drones and satellites. A prototype is expected in the second quarter of 2027, with full deployment planned for 2028.
Timeline and Challenges
Vice Admiral Thomas Daum, heading the military’s cyber command, shared this timeline in remarks reported by Reuters. He expressed optimism about the evaluation process, with most participating companies being German, and French firm ChapsVision as a foreign contender.
The absence of Palantir from the list is notable. Germany previously ruled it out in April, opting not to adopt the Pentagon’s and several NATO members’ existing Maven system. This led to the question: what will Germany use instead?
Addressing a Gap
The answer is now clear, with a timeline for development. However, the timing presents a challenge. While Maven is already deployed, Germany’s alternative is projected to reach the prototype stage in approximately 18 months and full deployment a year later, assuming smooth progress.
Defence projects often encounter delays, and building, testing, and integrating military software takes time. Meanwhile, other armies are already utilizing systems that Germany is still in the process of developing.
Balancing Immediate Needs and Future Development
The ongoing war in Ukraine highlights the importance of leveraging current tools, as the influx of drone and satellite imagery surpasses manual analysis capabilities. This makes a strong case for adopting readily available systems.
Yet, the war also underscores the strategic value of software control, especially in intelligence and targeting decisions. Berlin has been navigating this balance for some time, with initial plans to develop a European alternative to Palantir followed by concerns about creating new dependencies.
A Diverse Domestic Approach
Evaluating 30 mostly German systems suggests a different strategy: rather than relying on a single European champion, Berlin is fostering a field of domestic options. This approach offers more control over technology but also increases integration challenges.

Germany’s approach involves combining several components, making the project more complex but potentially offering greater flexibility.
