Germany’s Uniper Pivoting to Data Centres with €5bn Plan to Support the AI Boom
Uniper, the German energy giant bailed out by Berlin three years ago, is transforming its business to meet the demands of the data centre revolution and the surge in electricity consumption from artificial intelligence (AI) models.
Uniper’s Strategy
The utility plans to invest approximately €5 billion ($5.7 billion) by 2030 in a strategy focusing heavily on data centres, particularly in Germany, alongside renewable energy sources across Europe. This investment is split, with over half dedicated to flexible power generation using gas-fired plants that can adjust according to demand.
Benefits of Data Centres for Uniper
The appeal of data centres for Uniper is multifaceted:
-
Increasing Electricity Demand: As AI models become more prevalent, their electricity consumption grows significantly. Operators across Europe are competing to become the primary suppliers to this growing sector.
-
Location Advantage: Uniper has identified over ten existing power plant sites suitable for hosting data centres, with three in advanced development and one already completed in Britain. These sites offer convenience as they are located on land with established grid connections, cooling water infrastructure, and permits.
-
Revenue Stabilization: Uniper aims to shift from the volatile trading market to more stable revenue streams through structured power purchase agreements and direct supply from generation capacity it already controls. This approach provides long-term, contracted cash flow, preferred by investors.
Historical Context
Nationalizing Uniper in 2022 was a response to catastrophic losses caused by Russia’s gas supply cuts and skyrocketing energy prices. The German government, which still holds 99.12% of Uniper, is now preparing to sell down its stake. Canada’s pension fund manager CPPIB and the Czech energy group EPH are potential buyers, with interest expected to be formalized by mid-June.
The data centre strategy serves a dual purpose: it supports the AI boom while positioning Uniper as an attractive prospect for new owners.
