GM lays off 600 IT workers in AI skills swap as automaker pivots to software-defined vehicles

May 12, 2026 – 6:38 pm

General Motors is undergoing a significant restructuring, laying off 500 to 600 salaried IT workers and replacing them with engineers specializing in artificial intelligence (AI). This shift reflects GM’s strategic pivot from electric vehicles (EVs) and robotaxis to software-defined vehicles powered by Google Gemini and Nvidia Drive Thor.

The Restructuring:

  • Scope: Focused on specific departments in Austin, Texas, and Warren, Michigan, representing over 10% of GM’s IT department.
  • Purpose: Not a cost-cutting measure but a "skills swap" to align the workforce with the company’s evolving technological needs.
  • Impact: GM shares dropped four percent following the announcement.

GM’s Shifting Strategy:

The restructuring highlights how established companies like GM are adopting AI in practice:

  • Retreating from EV and autonomous driving: GM has significantly slowed its EV efforts, idling plants, cutting workers, and suspending development of key models. It also shut down Cruise’s robotaxi operations in December 2024.

  • Doubling down on software-defined vehicles: GM is integrating Google Gemini conversational AI into its vehicles starting this year and utilizing Nvidia’s Drive Thor technology.

  • Rebuilding the Workforce: GM is intentionally restructuring its workforce from the ground up, role by role, to include more data engineers, prompt specialists, and AI-native developers.

The Significance:

This move signals a tangible example of enterprise AI adoption, demonstrating how legacy companies are adapting to the demands of a rapidly evolving tech landscape.
