Goldman’s Marco Argenti says AI turns developers into managers of managers

Goldman Sachs' AI Strategy: Transforming Developers into Managers of Managers

Goldman Sachs chief information officer Marco Argenti shares his insights on the evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) within the company. According to Argenti, Goldman is in its third phase of AI adoption, shifting from cost savings to revenue generation.

Navigating Three Waves of AI Adoption:

  • First Wave: Early adopters—developers, approximately 12,000 out of 47,000 employees, who embrace AI as a norm.
  • Second Wave: Process rethinking stage where teams question and optimize workflows, aiming for seamless, automated processes ("straight-through processing").
  • Third Wave: Focused on growth and efficiency, using AI to drive the company's expansion.

Measuring Success:

Previously, Goldman measured AI success through developer activity, but Argenti notes a shift towards tangible outcomes. Projects now fund themselves, and teams deliver in less time, indicating improved efficiency.

Evolving Developer Roles:

The role of developers is transforming. They are no longer solely responsible for coding but also act as managers of managers by delegating tasks to AI agents and overseeing their work. This involves defining clear outcomes and managing resources, much like entrepreneurs.

A Safe and Adaptive AI Environment:

Argenti emphasizes the importance of assuming AI models will make mistakes and designing an environment that prevents potential harm. He compares this approach to a kindergarten, where safety is ensured without micromanaging each child. Goldman's strategy includes "zero trust" and "defence in depth," allowing AI models to challenge each other's work for enhanced security.

Open-Weight Models and Frontier Opportunities:

Argenti highlights the value of open-weight models that can be retrained on Goldman's data, fostering sovereignty and innovation.
