Google and Accenture are putting 1,000 engineers inside client offices

Google and Accenture’s Engineer Deployment Strategy

Accenture and Google Cloud have formed a unit to train and deploy up to 1,000 engineers within client companies, installing Gemini Enterprise. This initiative echoes similar moves by Microsoft, AWS, Anthropic, and TCS, all recognizing the need for on-site AI implementation.

According to Julie Sweet, CEO of Accenture, clients are expressing a common challenge:

"We promised AI can do that. And they’re like, we get it, except it’s not happening, help us make it happen."

The Proposed Solution

The Accenture Gemini Enterprise Business Group will position engineers directly within client offices. Google Cloud will provide training for these forward-deployed Accenture engineers, who will build applications on Google’s Gemini Enterprise platform.

Both companies declined to disclose financial details.

A Growing Trend

This isn’t a novel concept; Palantir popularized forward-deployed engineers, and the term has since become mainstream. This year, we’ve seen:

  • Microsoft launching Frontier, committing $2.5 billion and 6,000 engineers.
  • AWS announcing a similar initiative.
  • Anthropic and Blackstone forming Ode.
  • OpenAI establishing a dedicated services firm.
  • TCS planning to convert 8,900 staff into deployment engineers.

Five companies, one answer: When AI technology falls short, send human experts.

Implications

Software traditionally scaled without additional human resources. However, a platform requiring 1,000 trained engineers per partnership suggests a shift towards project-based work, characterized by consultancy economics rather than software economics.

Accenture, already a Microsoft Frontier partner, now acts as the anchor partner for Google Cloud’s initiative, leveraging its 50,000 Google Cloud-skilled employees. This highlights the scarcity of skilled engineers, as models become more interchangeable.

Platform companies are now turning to consultancies to train their own staff, recognizing the unique skills needed for on-site AI deployment.
