In a significant move, Fanuc, the world’s leading industrial robot manufacturer with over 1.1 million robots deployed globally, is collaborating with Google. This partnership merges Fanuc’s robotics expertise with Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise and Google’s Intrinsic robotics platform, aiming to revolutionize factory automation.
Fanuc’s vast global reach and Google’s cutting-edge technology combine to bring about a change comparable to Android’s impact on the smartphone industry. Fanuc shares reached an intraday record of 8,880 yen following the announcement.
Merging Robotics and AI
Google folded its robotics software subsidiary, Intrinsic, into its core business in February 2026, recognizing the platform’s potential. Intrinsic developed Flowstate, a web-based tool enabling manufacturers to create robotic applications without extensive coding. This platform handles motion planning, machine learning integration, and task orchestration across diverse hardware.
The partnership mirrors Android’s strategic move by Google, which provides an operating system for various phone manufacturers. Just as Android gives Google access to billions of users without manufacturing phones, Intrinsic offers its intelligence layer to control Fanuc, Universal Robots, and KUKA’s robots, granting Google a foothold in millions of industrial machines.
The Impact: A Game Changer
Fanuc’s adoption of the software platform signifies a pivotal moment, similar to Samsung’s early embrace of Android. With approximately 16-18% of global robot shipments and a dominant share in the CNC market, Fanuc’s decision ensures that the industry reevaluates its approach to robotics.
The technical integration involves using Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise, a generative AI platform powering eight million paid enterprise seats. This collaboration between Fanuc and Google promises to enhance robots’ capabilities, enabling them to understand human instructions, recognize objects, and coordinate autonomously.
