How One Startup Turned Backers into Believers: MAGFAST Broke the Crowdfunding Mold

May 20, 2026 – 11:58 am

TL;DR

MAGFAST survived the pitfalls that kill most hardware crowdfunding projects by embracing radical transparency. Founder Seymour Segnit rebuilt manufacturing from scratch and maintained open communication through every setback, fostering a community where 75% of investors are also customers with an average lifetime value of over $1,500.

Picture Kevin. It’s 2014, and on Kickstarter he has just backed the Coolest Cooler—a portable cooler with a built-in blender, Bluetooth speaker, and USB charger. He’s excited about this innovative product that promises to make his beach parties perfect. Eagerly, he tells his friends and checks his email for updates.

Then, silence. The campaign raises $13 million from 62,000+ backers, becoming one of the most-funded projects in Kickstarter history. Yet news breaks that the company is selling on Amazon while original backers are still waiting. Eventually, the Coolest Cooler collapses, leaving a third of backers without their promised products.

Kevin’s experience isn’t unique; only about 39% of Kickstarter campaigns reach their funding goal (

), and on Indiegogo, just 24% raise over $50,000 (

). The average campaign brings in around $8,000 (fitsmallbusiness)—insufficient for meaningful production. A Wharton School study shows backers statistically expect about one in ten projects to fail outright.

For every successful acquisition like Oculus Rift, there are countless beautifully produced campaigns that never materialize, leaving a trail of frustrated backers. You’re betting on a vision and the people behind it—a lesson Seymour Segnit understands well.

Seymour’s first crowdfunding attempt shipped tens of thousands of chargers but ultimately failed due to rapid growth and learning challenges. He regrouped, consolidated lessons learned, and in 2017, launched MAGFAST.

MAGFAST wasn’t a single device; it was a bold vision for a new type of integrated charging system—a modular, magnetic family of products designed for seamless compatibility. He saw the potential in a better charging solution: cable-free, convenient, durable, and aesthetically pleasing. Recognizing the ubiquity of chargers yet their lack of attention to user needs, Seymour developed cable-free charging technology that anticipates Apple’s MagSafe—a futuristic wireless charging standard.
