HubSpot backs down over using customer data for AI

HubSpot tried to feed its AI with customer data. The revolt took four days.

Background

HubSpot attempted to pool its customers’ data to power an AI feature, automatically enrolling users. After just four days, they faced a backlash and ultimately backed down.

HubSpot abandoned plans to utilize customer data for a new AI tool, following defaults set on July 1st. This move sparked immediate criticism from customers who insisted that their built-up data within the platform belonged to them, not the company.

The Outbreak

The issue stemmed from a lack of explicit consent. HubSpot’s initial setting enrolled everyone unless they manually changed it, transforming what seemed like a product update into a trust crisis.

The revolt unfolded primarily on LinkedIn, where sales leaders and RevOps teams voiced their concerns. Some even threatened to switch providers. Within days, HubSpot conceded.

Apology and Reversal

Chief Product and Technology Officer, Duncan Lennox, apologized, calling the change "a mistake." He announced that HubSpot would not enforce the new terms and that going forward, any use of customer data would require explicit consent.

Implications

The swift retreat highlights the risks software companies face when integrating AI into their products. Customer data, once a valuable asset, is now a sensitive topic. As businesses rush to bolt AI onto their offerings, the onus is on them to respect user autonomy and avoid similar pitfalls.

This incident serves as a reminder that in today’s competitive market, angering the customer base can have significant consequences for SaaS providers.
