Hybrids Outselling Electric Vehicles in Europe: Implications for 2035

Hybrids are outselling everything in Europe, a significant development with far-reaching implications for the automotive industry by 2035. While the US hybrid boom is driven by price incentives, Europe’s shift is largely due to regulatory changes proposed by the European Commission.

The Current Market Dynamics

  • US Hybrid Boom: American buyers are opting for hybrids and petrol cars over electric vehicles (EVs) post the expiration of a $7,500 federal credit. As per InsideEVs, 42.6% of second-quarter EV trade-ins in the US were for combustion engines, while 15.6% went to hybrids.
  • EU Hybrid Dominance: In contrast, Europe’s best-selling powertrain is currently hybrid, capturing 37.3% of EU registrations in H1 2026. This is a significant jump from 25% for battery-electric cars, with France at 35% and Germany at 29.3%.

Reasons Behind the Shift

The primary factor contributing to this trend is price. The average EV lease in the US reached $707 last month, approximately $100 above petrol equivalents. With the $7,500 credit no longer available, EVs become relatively less attractive to buyers looking for cost-effective options.

Regulatory Changes in Europe

Recognizing this trend, the European Commission has proposed adjusting the 2035 emissions target from a complete reduction to 90%. This would allow plug-in hybrids, range extenders, and mild hybrids to remain on the market post-2035. The remaining 10% can be offset with low-carbon steel or renewable fuels.

Future Prospects

While Europe is focusing on regulating hybrids until 2035, it is also building out charging infrastructure for EVs. A study by Transport and Environment (T&E) suggests that battery-electric sales in Europe might reach only 85% by 2035, with a more modest 47% in 2030, due to the three-year averaging of targets.

Conclusion

The current market dynamics and regulatory landscape indicate a complex future for electric vehicles and hybrids in Europe. As prices evolve, the US trend could mirror European shifts, emphasizing the need for sustainable transportation solutions tailored to regional economic and environmental considerations.
