Hyundai’s Luxury Brand Unveils a New Flagship EV: No European Plans Yet
The GV90, a full-size electric SUV with 490 kW, 800 Newton metres of torque, and a 123.5 kWh battery, has been unveiled by Genesis. It goes on sale in the United States early next year, but Europe remains unmentioned in the announcement.
The GV90 boasts impressive engineering, offering an estimated 500 km of range from its own testing, and rapid charging capabilities with a 10 to 80% charge in 22 minutes on a 350 kW charger. Its standout feature is the pillarless coach doors, made possible by a new body structure designed to maintain crash performance.
The SUV will be manufactured at a new plant in Ulsan, South Korea, and will expand Genesis’s U.S. lineup to seven cars. However, Europe appears to be left out, with sales figures reflecting a declining market share for Genesis on the continent.
Analysts have previously expressed skepticism about Genesis’s European operations, leading to a shift in strategy from a dealership-free model to shared showrooms with Hyundai and Kia, incorporating hybrids and range extenders.
The GV90 enters a competitive segment against luxury electric SUV competitors like the Mercedes EQS SUV and the upcoming BMW i7 facelift. Its success will depend on factors such as pricing, hybrid options, and residual values in both the U.S. and European markets.
