Intrepid Growth Partners Closes $525 Million AI Fund with State Money from Four Countries

Intrepid Growth Partners has successfully closed its first fund at a substantial $525 million, securing investments from more than 80 limited partners. Among them are prominent entities like Temasek, Abu Dhabi Investment Council, the British Business Bank, Export Development Canada, and the Business Development Bank of Canada—all contributing public money from four different countries.

The firm, founded by Mark Machin, Mark Shulgan, and Ajay Agrawal in 2023, already boasts nine portfolio companies under its belt, including PhysicsX in London and StackAdapt in Toronto.

Key Points:

  • Impressive Backer List: The fund’s diverse investor base includes five state-backed or state-funded entities.
  • Government Support: Two Canadian government ministers, Evan Solomon (AI and Digital Innovation) and Kanishka Narayan (first UK cabinet-level AI minister), publicly recognized the significance of this investment.
  • Founders’ Expertise: The founders bring extensive experience from prominent Canadian institutional investors like the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (Machin), OMERS (Shulgan), and the University of Toronto (Agrawal).
  • Focus on Long-Term AI Trajectories: The firm differentiates itself by focusing on the long-term development of AI, backing entrepreneurs building towards its future potential. This is reflected in its advisory board, which includes AI research pioneer Richard Sutton and other notable figures like Sendhil Mullainathan (MIT), Sir Mike Wigston (former Chief of the Air Staff), and Harley Finkelstein (Shopify).

As AI continues to evolve rapidly, Intrepid Growth Partners positions itself at the forefront, ready to capitalize on emerging opportunities.
