Shares of Kawasaki Heavy Industries jumped 12% following the announcement of a new partnership with Nvidia and other tech giants. The Japanese industrial group will establish a San Jose development base focused on physical AI for robots.
Kawasaki Heavy Industries, a 130-year-old company, has formed an alliance with Nvidia, Analog Devices, Microsoft, and Fujitsu to revolutionize robot technology. This partnership aims to enhance the development of physical AI, particularly in healthcare, nursing care, and mobility applications.
The initial showcase of this collaboration is CORLEO, a four-legged personal mobility robot designed for off-road use. The rider straddles and steers CORLEO by shifting their weight, while the robot uses a 150cc hydrogen engine to move its leg-mounted drive units. Kawasaki aims to bring CORLEO to market by 2035, with potential usage at Expo 2030 in Riyadh.
Nvidia’s simulation tools will play a crucial role in refining CORLEO’s development process, alongside medical robotics work aimed at assisting doctors and nurses. This partnership follows Nikkei’s earlier report, which outlined the plan before its official confirmation.
Morgan Stanley MUFG analysts anticipate that this collaboration could significantly accelerate Kawasaki’s AI robot development efforts. The company’s investment plan for the upcoming fiscal year indicates a substantial increase in robot-related spending, demonstrating their proactive approach to AI adoption.
This development is part of a broader trend where Japanese industrial robotics is transforming through partnerships with foundation-model providers like Google and now Nvidia. With Japan facing demographic challenges, physical AI in elder care has become a politically prioritized area for investment.
