Luffy AI Raises £8.1M to Integrate Self-Tuning AI in Electric Motors
Luffy AI, an Abingdon startup developing what it calls neuroplastic AI for real-time control of physical machines, has secured £8.1 million in a Series A funding round, the company announced on Tuesday. The investment was led by BGF, described as the UK and Ireland’s most active equity investor, with the funds earmarked for transitioning pilots into commercial deployments.
Luffy is a true spinout from Culham Campus near Oxford, formerly known more for fusion research than deeptech startups. Founded by Dr. Matthew Carr and Dr. Alex Meakins, both former nuclear physicists from the UK Atomic Energy Authority, Luffy focuses on a unique approach to AI in industry.
The startup tackles a challenge often overlooked in the midst of the wider AI boom: large language and image models require vast data, cloud computing, and constant connectivity, which are not ideal for factory floors or physical machines. Unlike many high-profile British investments in AI, such as Wayve’s $1 billion round, Luffy takes a different path.
Their Solution
Luffy’s solution involves compact neural networks trained initially in simulation, eliminating the need for large training sets commonly required by conventional deep learning. This approach is claimed to be up to 400 times more efficient. The architecture is designed to reside directly on the hardware, allowing models to self-refine from live feedback rather than relying on cloud retraining.
This enables Luffy’s AI to operate on the edge and dynamically adjust itself based on real-time conditions, a key advantage in industrial settings.
Target Applications
The primary target is electric motors, which consume approximately half of global electricity. Luffy aims to optimize these motors through adaptive control, enabling them to self-tune to their load and operating conditions in the field. This promises to reduce energy consumption, shorten commissioning times, and enhance performance without requiring a specialist engineer on-site.
"AI has been transformative for language and image generation but has yet to make a substantial impact in industry beyond predictive maintenance and dashboards," said Carr, Luffy’s CEO. "Factories and motors need AI that is small, fast, and adaptive in real time—something we believe our system delivers."
Investors
Joining BGF were MIG Capital, a Munich deep-tech investor through its MIG Fonds, along with existing backers Bow Capital, Chrysalix, Momenta, and UKI2S. Kate Ronayne, an early-stage investor at BGF, expressed enthusiasm for Luffy’s disruption of "an industry norm that has stood for 100 years" by embedding specialized AI directly into physical machines.
