Meta Settles Kentucky Case, Ending First School-District Trial Over Youth Mental Health

Meta has reached a settlement in the Breathitt County school district case, bringing an end to the first US trial seeking compensation from social media companies for youth mental health issues. The agreement, revealed in a court filing on Thursday, resolves the lawsuit brought by the eastern Kentucky school district and follows settlements made earlier this week by co-defendants YouTube, Snap, and TikTok. Financial details remain confidential.
The Kentucky case, selected as a bellwether out of approximately 1,200 similar lawsuits, was scheduled for trial on June 12 before Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland, California. Breathitt had demanded over $60 million to fund a 15-year mental health program.
This settlement is significant as it removes the trial from the calendar and has procedural implications for the broader MDL 3047, the federal multidistrict litigation consolidating over 2,000 social media addiction claims against Meta, Google, Snap, and TikTok. Bellwether cases are used to determine the value of subsequent cases.
Meta’s decision to settle avoids a public verdict that could have set a precedent for future negotiations. It also comes at a time when Meta is facing multiple lawsuits, including one from a young woman who blamed Instagram and YouTube for her depression and anxiety, and another from New Mexico where a jury awarded $375 million.
While the settlement doesn’t resolve the underlying policy debate, it does mark a strategic move by Meta to avoid further high-profile trials in the near future. The MDL continues to include hundreds of school district claims, state attorney general cases, and personal injury lawsuits.
