Meta's CTO Tells Employees to Use AI Gains for More Work, Not More Time Off
Andrew Bosworth, Meta's chief technology officer, recently addressed a question about reviving the company's cancelled holiday program, Meta Days. In response, he discouraged employees from asking for more time off and encouraged them to use AI productivity gains to build "cooler stuff."
"Stop asking about Meta Days. It's very dumb." — Andrew Bosworth
Bosworth suggested that staff should channel their AI-driven productivity into creating more products rather than taking extra vacation days. He made the comment during a July Q&A, according to multiple attendees.
The context is notable given Meta's recent job cuts and significant AI investments. In May, the company cut 8,000 jobs while spending up to $135 billion on AI infrastructure this year. Bosworth himself stands to earn up to $921 million from a stock option program tied to Meta reaching a $9 trillion valuation by 2031.
The broader debate revolves around ownership of AI productivity gains—whether they belong to workers or employers. While Jeff Bezos has suggested that AI could allow households to have a single earner, Morgan Stanley predicted that AI would enable millions to take on multiple jobs. Bosworth's stance aligns with the employer's perspective: more output with no extra time off.
