Microsoft and Nvidia CEOs to Launch Surface Laptop Ultra on Wednesday

Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, and Jensen Huang from Nvidia will present the Surface Laptop Ultra in San Francisco on Wednesday. This is the first Surface device built around Nvidia’s RTX Spark chip, designed to enable AI agents to run directly on the device rather than in the cloud.
This launch extends Microsoft's push, initiated at its Build conference in June, to position Windows as a home for AI agents that can write and test code. Last month, Microsoft bundled these agents into a new Copilot app. Running more of this work on laptops could shift load from Azure’s cloud onto customers' machines.
The laptop was first showcased at Computex in Taipei in June, featuring a 15-inch mini-LED screen and up to 128GB of memory. Its RTX Spark chip, developed by Nvidia with MediaTek, combines up to 20 processor cores with a Blackwell graphics chip, delivering up to one petaflop of AI performance.
Pricing remains a key question due to global memory shortages driving up laptop and desktop costs. Nvidia recently increased the price of its DGX Spark, a small AI desktop with 128GB of memory, by about 75% to $6,950. Previously, Microsoft's AI laptops cost under $2,000.
Analysts note that Microsoft and Nvidia will need to demonstrate safe containment of such agents on personal computers. Currently, the laptop is listed as a pre-release product pending regulatory approval.
