Moonshot AI’s $20bn valuation seals one of China’s fastest AI funding trajectories

Moonshot AI Secures $2 Billion Funding Round with $20 Billion Valuation

Meituan Dragon Ball is leading a $2 billion investment round in Beijing-based AI startup, Moonshot AI, according to Bloomberg. The deal values the company at over $20 billion, marking a significant rise from its previous valuation of around $3 billion just two years ago.

Moonshot, founded by former Tsinghua University classmates in March 2023, develops the Kimi chatbot. The round’s funding will support its expansion, especially as Kimi’s annual recurring revenue has doubled to over $200 million in just two months.

Key Investors and Strategic Alignment:

  • Meituan Dragon Ball: The food and services platform’s strategic investment arm has been investing in Chinese AI for 18 months.
  • China Mobile: This state-backed telecoms operator brings infrastructure access and a sovereign-friendly alignment.
  • CITIC Private Equity Funds: One of China’s largest private equity vehicles, contributing to Moonshot’s impressive funding total.

A Fast-Paced Funding Journey:

Moonshot has raised over $3.9 billion in the past six months, positioning it as one of the most heavily funded Chinese LLM startups this cycle. This round is a testament to the company’s rapid growth and commercial success, contrasting with DeepSeek’s emphasis on research output and open-source releases. Moonshot, instead, focuses on consumer products and revenue generation. The company is also reportedly preparing for an IPO.

Note: The round has not yet formally closed, according to Tracxn’s company profile.
