Neko Health, a body-scanning startup founded by Spotify’s Daniel Ek, has secured $700 million in funding through its Series C round, valuing the company at nearly $7 billion. This significant investment will fuel the opening of Neko’s first US clinics, starting in New York this year.
Lightspeed Venture Partners led the round, with co-lead O.G. Venture Partners. Notable investors include Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, Maria Sharapova, will.i.am, Thierry Henry, Jimmy Iovine, and Tim Ferriss.
Co-founder and CEO Hjalmar Nilsonne expressed their mission: "With this round, we’re taking that mission to the US for the first time." Bejul Somaia of Lightspeed Venture Partners echoed this sentiment, describing Neko as "one of the most important healthcare companies of our generation."
What Neko Offers
Neko operates private clinics offering a 60-minute full-body scan. Sensors capture millions of data points related to skin, heart, and circulation health. The scan screens for early signs of skin cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. In the UK, the scan costs £299; pricing in the US has yet to be announced.
Ek co-founded Neko in 2018 with Hjalmar Nilsonne and launched it in 2023. The company’s unique approach involves designing its own hardware, software, and clinics, enabling faster improvements than competitors using off-the-shelf machines.
Preventive Care Gains Momentum
Neko’s success is part of a broader trend in preventive care. Insurers like Alan are prioritizing proactive health management, and other startups offer lab tests and AI-driven body scanners from Midjourney. US rivals Prenuvo and Ezra also sell whole-body MRI scans.
Neko boasts over 100,000 completed scans and 350,000 more people registered or waiting. They claim that three out of four returning members with flagged conditions have since achieved control over their health. Despite some doctors’ skepticism about the effectiveness and cost-benefit ratio, Neko’s eight clinics across Sweden and the UK—including its largest in London—prove their growing popularity.
