Nvidia Teams Up with Chip Rival d-Matrix on Inference

Nvidia is teaming up with one of its chip rivals instead of crushing it. The GPU giant is pairing its hardware with d-Matrix’s inference chips, part of a pattern of befriending the startups trying to unseat it.

Nvidia has found a new way to handle its chip rivals: work with them. The GPU giant is combining its hardware with inference chips from the startup d-Matrix, as reported by The Information. The two will ship a joint system to run AI models, with Parasail being their first customer, set to go live later this year. This aligns with Nvidia’s broader trend of partnering with companies aiming to dethrone it.

Logic Behind the Partnership

The logic behind this collaboration follows the nature of AI work:

  • Prefill phase requires heavy computation, suitable for Nvidia’s GPUs.
  • Decode phase is lighter and repetitive, better suited for specialized chips.

By combining these two, each component can excel in its respective role.

What d-Matrix Brings to the Table

d-Matrix has developed the Corsair accelerator with a focus on "in-memory computing", keeping data close to the logic that processes it. Founded in 2019, the company raised $275 million at a $2 billion valuation in November and is currently seeking further funding. CEO Sid Sheth highlights their edge: placing compute and memory on a single chip. d-Matrix claims their setup can run tokens about 10 times faster, at one-third of the cost and up to five times less energy for certain tasks, compared to Nvidia’s chips that rely heavily on high-bandwidth memory.

Nvidia’s Frenemy Playbook

This partnership stands out because Nvidia rarely requires such alliances. It dominates AI chip markets, yet startups like d-Matrix are designed to challenge its lead. Instead of confronting every rival head-on, Nvidia integrates them into its ecosystem. This approach offers two advantages:

  • If specialized inference chips gain traction, Nvidia benefits from the shift.
  • Should these chips falter, Nvidia’s losses are minimal.

In either case, customers remain within Nvidia’s orbit.

Implications and Impact

The deal signifies a mature AI chip market where buyers seek the most cost-effective solution for each specific job, rather than relying on a single powerful GPU. Nvidia’s response is to ensure it remains the go-to seller or at least a nearby option for any winning technology.
