Octopus Energy Launches Octopus Charge in US, Canada, and Mexico
Octopus Energy has introduced Octopus Charge in North America, providing access to over 210,000 chargers across the US, Canada, and Mexico through a single app. This is a significant expansion compared to its European counterpart, Octopus Electroverse, which caters to 1.5 million chargers in over 40 countries.
A Seamless Charging Experience
The app promises a straightforward and transparent charging process. Each operator’s prices are passed through untouched, ensuring drivers pay the exact amount charged at the station. This means a $0.50-per-kWh charger will still cost $0.50 through the app.
Interoperability and Regulation
The difference between the North American and European markets lies in interoperability and regulation. Europe mandated access to charging infrastructure through rules that took effect in April 2024, ensuring new public charging points accept cards and contactless payments and display prices clearly.
In contrast, North America lacks similar regulations, allowing major operators like Tesla, Ionna, and Electrify America to exclude themselves from apps like Octopus Charge.
Partners and Coverage
Despite the absence of certain large operators, Octopus Charge has secured partnerships with over 20 networks, including EVgo, ChargePoint, Blink, bp pulse, Shell Recharge, FLO, and Circle K.
A Universal Solution for EV Drivers
Octopus Charge distinguishes itself by offering a universal solution, catering to any electric vehicle, unlike General Motors’ app that is limited to their own brand. The company emphasizes removing friction for drivers, allowing them to spend less time managing charging and more time enjoying their journeys.
European Comparison
While North America struggles with interoperability, Europe is consolidating its charging networks, with Octopus Electroverse reaching a million registered drivers in July. Smaller operators continue to raise funds to expand their networks, all while utilizing the same roaming layer.
