OneDrive Blocks Screenshots of Sensitive Documents (But Only in Microsoft’s Browser)
OneDrive will block screenshots of sensitive documents, but only in Microsoft’s own browser.
The Restriction:
- Applies to enterprise accounts using Purview Information Protection.
- Chrome, Firefox, and Safari will not enforce it.
- Microsoft recommends forcing employees onto Edge.

TL;DR:
Starting next month, OneDrive and SharePoint will block screen captures of sensitivity-labelled PDFs in Microsoft Edge when certain conditions are met:
- The document carries a Purview Information Protection label without the Copy (EXTRACT) permission.
- By default, screenshot blocking is activated.
Personal OneDrive accounts and unlabelled files remain unaffected.
Closing a Gap:
This feature addresses a gap between Microsoft’s desktop apps and browser experience, ensuring consistent protection for labelled documents. Previously, Purview labels could prevent editing, printing, copying, and screenshotting in supported desktop applications, but not consistently in the browser.
Browser Compatibility:
- Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and mobile browsers will not support the restriction.
- Microsoft recommends using Conditional Access or browser management policies to direct employees toward Edge for consistent security.
The Security Benefit:
This measure enhances security, particularly for financial records, legal documents, and unreleased product materials, but its effectiveness hinges on all users adhering to Microsoft’s browser.
